Bronze medium, concentrated binder 60 ml

Bronze medium, concentrated binder 60 ml

Product code: 750032
Schmincke

Schmincke Bronze Medium (60 ml) is a specialized professional binder designed specifically for dissolving and binding Schmincke Oil Bronze dry metallic pigments. This alkyd resin-based medium is an indispensable tool for artists looking to create exceptionally brilliant, durable, and mirror-smooth metallic effects in oil paintings, on wood, or on other surfaces. According to Schmincke's official product information, this specific formulation ensures that the genuine metal-based pigments retain their original maximum brilliance and do not tarnish over time.

Product Features:

Special formulation for metals: Unlike standard oil painting mediums or linseed oil, this product is formulated to prevent the oxidation (tarnishing or rusting) of genuine bronze and aluminum powders.
Alkyd resin-based: Contains high-quality alkyd resin and mineral spirits, ensuring excellent flow and adhesion for the paint mixture.
Dries water- and rub-resistant: Forms a durable, satin-gloss protective layer after drying that firmly holds the metallic pigment on the substrate.
Compact 60 ml glass bottle: A convenient and handy bottle that makes it easy to dispense the medium drop by drop onto the palette

Application Guide
According to Schmincke experts, follow these steps to achieve the ideal metallic paint:
Mixing ratio: Place the desired amount of Schmincke Oil Bronze powder onto the palette. The optimal ratio is 3 parts powder to 2 parts Bronze Medium.
Mixing process: Blend the components with a metal or plastic palette knife into a smooth, creamy paste. Do not use a brush for mixing initially to avoid damaging the bristles with the thick powder.
Application: Apply the freshly mixed metallic paint onto the desired surface (canvas, primed wood, cardboard) using a brush.
Thinning and cleaning: If the mixture feels too thick, add a few drops of turpentine substitute (Turpentine Substitute 750019). Use turpentine substitute or mineral spirits to clean tools and brushes immediately after finishing work.

Pros:

Preserves genuine metallic shine: This is the only medium that ensures the Oil Bronze powder does not lose its mirror-smooth effect. Standard linseed oil would make the metallic powder dull and "muddy."
Universal adhesion: Allows the Oil Bronze pigment to be applied to a wide variety of surfaces—including prepared wood, plaster, and metal, in addition to canvas.
Accelerates drying: Thanks to the alkyd resin formulation, the mixed paint dries faster than traditional oil paints, allowing projects to progress more quickly.
Economical: The 60 ml bottle lasts a long time, as metallic details are usually done on a small scale and only a few drops of medium are needed at a time.

Cons:

Strong odor: Since the product contains solvent (mineral spirits), it has a distinct smell. Working in a well-ventilated room is recommended.
Short "open time" on the palette: Because the medium dries relatively quickly due to the solvents, the paint mixture should be prepared in small quantities and used immediately. Dried mixture on the palette cannot be re-liquefied.
Remains solvent-sensitive: Although the dried surface is water-resistant, it remains sensitive to turpentine and oil painting solvents even after fully curing.

Frequently Bought Together:

Schmincke Oil Bronze metallic pigments (50 ml): This medium is designed specifically for use with these dry powders (available in Rich Gold, Rich Pale Gold, Pale Gold, Copper, Silver).
Schmincke Turpentine Substitute (750019): Required for thinning the mixture and cleaning brushes.
da Vinci NOVA or COLINEO synthetic brushes: Strong and resilient bristles that withstand the abrasive nature of metal powder and maintain a sharp point.
Ceramic mixing palettes: Since alkyd medium is difficult to remove from plastic palettes, a porcelain or ceramic surface is the best choice.
