Japanese paper CHIYOGAMI 70 gsm 61 x 47 cm - DIFFERENT VARIATIONS
Product code: 102161Originally developed in the Edo period, Japanese mulberry papers with colourful auspicious designs were printed from woodblocks for covering small home accessories and for maksing paper dolls. Today, Chiyogami is hand silkscreened with non-fading pigments in small studios across Japan. New patterns, both traditional and contemporary, are constantly produced in endless colour combinations.
These very strong dynamic papers are ideal for covering books, tins and boxes, making cards and collages, as backround for photos and works of art, or as accent on bookshelves and walls. The sky's the limit!
Imitation Chiyogami is currently being produced by offset printing in other Asian countries. Dont be fooled by these lesser-quality imitations, which are likely to fade and are usually created on weaker base paper. The vibrancy and strenght of the authentic Japanese silkscreen prints cannot be rivaled.
Making each sheet of Chiyogami is an incredibly labour-intensive process. A number of patterned silk screens, the size of a whole sheet of paper, must be produced from an initial painting, one screen for each colour that you see in the pattern.
A base paper is first glued temporarily down to a flat board. The silkscreen for the first colour layer is registered (fitted exactly) and then the first colour is applied by squeegeeing the pigment trough the screen with a wide plastic scraper. The inks are custom-mixed for each printing, so sometimes the colours are not axactly like the previous batch. After the colour application, the paper is dried.
The process is repeated for each colour - from three to 15 times - until the patterns are completely printed.
