The term “Bütten” in German refers to genuine mould-made paper, produced using a traditional paper moulding process rather than standard machine-made paper.

The English term Foolscap paper (also known as foolscape paper or foolscap folio) describes a historic paper format that was widely used in Europe before the introduction of standardised A-series formats such as A4 and A3. The name Foolscap originates from an old paper watermark depicting a jester’s cap (fool’s cap). Although many papers later adopted different watermarks, the name remained associated with this traditional paper format.
